The talented Dardenne Brothers came out with this intense, moving film in 1996.
It concerns a boy and his father, both effectively crooks who smuggle illegal immigrants into Belgium, then bilk them to live in hovels which they "rent" to them.
When one such customer-a man-gets in a serious accident that could expose the whole shabby enterprise, he knows he's in trouble. Before the desperate father arrives, the man asks the son to care for his family.
This is a story of a boy good enough on the inside to distance himself from his Dad, and transform himself to keep a promise.
It is superb, and the leads drive it.
