For those of you who missed it in theatres, recently released on DVD is the petrifying "1408", perfect for adult Halloween viewing, and trust me- way too scary for the little ones.
Plot revolves around a failed writer-turned-cynical ghost-chasing journalist (ably played by a rather puffy-looking John Cusack) who finally and frighteningly finds the real thing in a certain New York City hotel room.
There is nothing subtle or complex about this feature, but its combination of a good ghostly yarn, solid acting by Cusack (in essentially a one-man role, though Samuel L. Jackson does a nice sinister turn as the hotel manager), and judicious use of special effects, all serve to deliver the authentic horror good in spades.
Prepare to be mightily spooked once you enter Room 1408.
PS- For those of you who did catch this title, here's a fine alternate pick: "The Descent" (2005), a British chiller about a group of female undereground cave explorers, who, out for rigorous adventure, discover much more than they bargained for in this mysterious, subterranean world.
To put it plainly, yikes!
